The Long-Distance Job Search

23 Aug

Finding a job in another city or state can be difficult. Unfortunately for qualified out-of-state applicants, many employers don’t want to go through the trouble of interviewing and hiring someone from out-of-town. Some employers assume that they’ll have to pay you a relocation allowance, or pay for you to fly in for an interview. Others just like to support the locals: why hire a visitor when there are plenty of qualified people in their own backyard?

Even though a long-distance job search can be tough, here are a few things you can do to make it easier:

1. When choosing a career college, select a program offering nationally transferable credentials.

Your success could rise and fall based on where you went to school. Many career college programs only qualify you to sit for exams and certifications required by the state in which the college is located. The best schools will prepare you to sit for more rigorous exams to earn national credentials. These certifications will qualify you to work in any state without additional education.

For example (warning, shameless plug ahead!) Community Care College is one of the only colleges in the state of Oklahoma to offer students a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential upon successful completion of the program and an exam produced by the American Association of Medical Assistants.. This credential demonstrates to employers across the nation that you are rigorously trained in both front office and back office procedures.

CMAs only receive three attempts on the exam so employers can be sure that anyone with a CMA credential is well-prepared academically and practically for the occupation. CMAs are also required to do some continuing education in order to keep their credential current. Although earning and keeping the CMA takes some work, it identifies you as an elite practitioner in your profession and will help you seamlessly transition into a new job anywhere in the country.

(Students are also given the option to obtain the RMA credential from American Medical Technologist.)

2. Phone a Friend

One of the best things you can do is cultivate relationships in the area where you want to move. This is especially easy if you are returning to your hometown. Call friends and family in the area and ask them for ideas on your job search. They may be able to put in a good, personal, local word for your skills–making it worthwhile for a potential employer to call you for an interview.

3. The Drive By

If it is fairly easy for you to travel to your desired location, consider spending a week or so in the area doing drive-bys at local employers. Dress professionally, bring plenty of copies of your resume, and explain to potential employers that you plan to relocate to the area on (X date) and would love to work for their practice or business. Since you’re only the area for a week, it gives you a reason to ask for an interview–either the same day or later in the week. Don’t be too pushy, but do project confidence.

4. Leave a Note

On your resume and cover letter, make it clear that you plan to relocate on your own dime. Also indicate how and when you are available for interviews (also on your own expense). Some employers are perfectly willing to interview out-of-town candidates if those candidates are willing to foot the bill.

5. Just Do It.

Ultimately, the best way to relocate is to move first, find a job second. This is particularly true if:

1) your spouse or partner has already found work in the region

2) you have at least three months, and preferably six months, of living expenses saved.

3) you have family in the area who may be able to help you out financially or offer a place for you to stay at a reduced rent for a short length of time.

6. Deploy Only in Emergencies

Many experts have debated about whether or not it is okay to put your parents’ or a friend’s home address on your resume, in order to look like a local resident. Other experts suggest getting a P.O. box in the zip code and changing your cell phone number to your destination’s area code.

This can often backfire, so only deploy this tactic under these circumstances:

1) You live close enough to your destination that you can easily travel there to participate in interviews. There is nothing worse than having to explain to a potential employer that although you submitted your resume with a local address, you won’t be able to make an interview until you can purchase a flight out of town.

2) Your spouse or partner has already relocated to the new destination and so you actually do have a local address in your name.

3) You have a good (honest) explanation for why your address and phone number are local, but your current employer is not. For example, your current job requires you to travel to your desired location frequently so you picked up a local P.O. box and phone number.

This guest post is by Tosha McCarter, BS, Administrative Assistant to Dr. Kirk

You’ve finished your interview, where do you go from here? I am sure you are anxious and ready to find out if you will get the job that you have applied for. From personal experience the wait can be torturous. However, don’t get pushy! I don’t know of any employers that would knowingly hire a pushy employee.

So, how do you get the upper hand? You know, that little something special that really makes the difference, from being one in a hundred, rather than one of hundreds? Good, old fashion, common courtesy that’s how! It can be as simple as sending a thank you letter to your interviewer. Be sincere; thank them for their time and for giving you the opportunity to meet with them. I mean, at least they let you interview.

Now, I know that we live in a time where technology is everything, and we can send a text in a matter of seconds, but you really need to send a hand written thank you. Nothing says, I put absolutely no time or effort into this like a poorly constructed e-mail with bad grammar and abbreviations. When you write out your letter be sure to address the letter to your interviewer, spell their name CORRECTLY. They want to know that you pay attention to details and care about people. Nothing screams “I’m a telemarketer who doesn’t know you from Adam” than an incorrectly pronounced name.

It’s the same scenario when writing a letter. I cringe, time after time, when people spell my name incorrectly. I really hope that I am making myself clear how important spelling and grammar are to your future employer. The way you present yourself, in writing and in person, is very important because you only have one chance to make a first impression.

Now to the “good” stuff, writing and sending the letter: You should send the letter the day of your interview. Go ahead and use that energy and excitement to make sure your interview wasn’t in vain. Your employer needs to know that you are punctual. By getting the letter written and in the mail the same day, it shows your true desire to work for their company. You may be asking, “What should this letter say?” Be sure to thank them for their time, and be positive about the future (i.e. I look forward to the next step with ABC Company; or I look forward to speaking with you soon). Sell yourself! There is no shame mentioning one aspect of the job you know that you would be killer at. This lets them know that you were paying attention, and that you want this job not a job. Be sure to keep the note short and simple. These tips will definitely make your thank you letter successful.

If you haven’t heard from the employer within a week after sending the thank you, it is completely acceptable to follow up. When following up use the interviewer’s preferred method of communication, whether it is by e-mail, phone or in person. You may think this sounds lame or that it will take tons of time; you should know it is worth the effort.  Did you know that not writing a thank you letter is one of the top ten interview mistakes according to Robert LaBombard CEO, GradStaff Inc.? So don’t be too proud to say thanks your future employer will be happy that you did!

The Underground Job Search

Post by Sara Harper Gallagher, Assistant to Teresa Knox at Community Care College, Clary Sage College and Oklahoma Technical College and Blogger at Gears and Shifts

This morning, I heard a news story on the radio about the computer company Hewlett-Packard, which just settled a court case “neither admitting nor denying” that they overcharged the government on federal contracts, and used the money to pay kickbacks to consultants who recommended HP products for government purchase.

It seems like I’ve been hearing more and more about “white-collar” crime lately. Apparently, good old-fashioned crimes of passion are a thing of the past.

As I was thinking about this trend, sipping my Diet Coke (which I require to do any deep thinking), I couldn’t help but wonder:

How does crime like this even happen?

I have a hard enough time asking my friends for change for the coke machine…let alone “insider information” to help me score big in the stock market.

And then I thought:

I’ll bet that’s how most people feel when they try to find jobs that aren’t advertised.

Almost 80% of all available jobs aren’t advertised in the paper or on the internet. Many employers rely on word-of-mouth and other factors to find qualified candidates. And yet, I know that must of us feel very uncomfortable walking into a business unannounced to ask about job openings.

Some of us even feel like we’re doing something wrong. But if all of us compete for the same 20% of advertised jobs, 80% of us are going to be very, very frustrated job seekers. So here are some tips to help you work the “underground job network.”

1. Do make phone calls, even to places who aren’t advertising job leads.

However, before you do this, make sure you do at least some basic research about the business (internet is great for that) and prepare a 30-second introduction speech (you can even write it down). Something like this works well:

Hello, my name is XYZ. I’m a certified Medical Assistant looking for a position at a family practice clinic. I wanted to call you because you have such a great reputation in the community, and I have many friends who are patients there. Your website doesn’t show any open positions, but I would love to send my resume to you anyway in case anything opens up.

2. Do spend a half-day doing “drive by’s.”

Bring lots of copies of your resume, printed on nice linen paper, and wear professional but comfortable clothing. Drop by at least fifteen offices and introduce yourself with a similar speech as above…you may be asked to do an “impromptu” interview on the spot!

3. Leverage your network.

You need to do this in two ways. First (and most importantly) write a list of everyone you know who may be willing to help you in your job search. Don’t worry about picking people with a direct connection to your field. For example, I don’t work in the healthcare industry, but I know TONS of doctors and corporate medical professionals. But you wouldn’t know that unless you asked.

Next, contact these people individually and personally and let them know you’re looking for work and whether they have any ideas about where you might look. Asking for “ideas” is better than asking for “job leads” because most people will freeze up when you mention the J-word. Unless they are actively searching for the same kind of job, they won’t know about specific positions. However, they will probably know people who are either hiring, or know someone else who is.

The second way to leverage your network is online. You should be on LinkedIn and other networks, and you should be paying attention to the content you have posted on FB and twitter. Make sure it’s professional, at least while you’re searching for a job.

4. Skip the big job sites, and look up company websites individually to look for open positions.

Posting on big job sites can be expensive, so lots of places will simply post open jobs on their own website.
